I send a postcard to each of my students one week before school begins. On the card, I welcome the child and express my delight that he or she will be in my class. I also ask him or her to bring a souvenir from a summer trip or experience. Students share their souvenirs on the first day of school, describing their summertime experiences and pointing to locations on a map. My students not only enjoy this ice breaker, but their souvenirs also become a quick bulletin board entitled “Summer Treasures That Brought Us Pleasure.” |

"Try playing classical music in the morning as students unpack! Experts say it stimulates cognitive thought and it introduces students to a whole new world of music."
