| (I actually got this idea from Ms. Brenda from Texas).
On the first day of school, I have my students play an inference game to find out about a mystery person. First I divide the class into groups. Without revealing the source, I provide each group with an envelope filled with six personal effects (an apple earring, a picture of my husband and son, a sorority pin, a golf tee, a cat toy, etc.) I instruct each group to examine its stash to determine clues about the objects’ owner: approximate age, occupation, hobbies, etc. Each group records its inferences and then reports its findings to the rest of the class. After each group has presented its report, I reveal that all of the items actually belong to one person me! Students enjoy finding out about their teacher in this creative way.
